What iTunes 4.9 means for podcasting

[Archived in Apple, Entry, iTunes]

[The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW)] Rex Hammock is penning a series of blog postings about the effect that Apple's recent announcement of podcasting support in iTunes 4.9 will have on podcasting as a whole. Rex thinks, and I agree, that iTunes 4.9 will change the face of podcasting as we know it. Apple is good at many things, one of them making tech go mainstream incredibly fast. As soon as that first podcast shows up in the iTunes Music Store you will have millions of people who have never even heard of podcasting as potential listeners.

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

[Bleeding Edge] How iTunes will support Podcasting: Steve Jobs did little more than whet everyone's appetites with his announcement that the next version of iTunes would support podcasts. Now Apple's providing some more details, and it looks much like what iPodder does, which in essence is RSS for podcasts.

[For Immediate Release: The Hobson and Holtz Report] The Hobson & Holtz Report - Podcast #36: May 26, 2005: Feature - Chad Dickerson’s podcast vertigo, InfoWorld, Technorati, PubSub, Podscope, Darren Barefoot, Potkast, Google, Dave Winer, Doc Searls, Raytheon, Jonathan Marks, Apple, iTunes, Winamp, Winamp iPod plugin, BBC, Newsweek, NPR, ABC, NBC, The Observer blog, Business Week Online, Adam Curry, Adam Curry’s Podcast Show on Sirius Satellite Radio; KYOU Radio, Kazaa, RIAA, Garageband, Propaganda, Mixcast Live, Boku, Skype, Constantin Basturea, FeedBurner.

http://radar.oreilly.com [Radar.oreilly.com] O'Reilly Radar > Podcast support in next version of iTunes: At the Wall Street Journal's D Conference, Steve Jobs tonight showed ipodder-like features in the next release of iTunes, supposedly available within about 60 days. I was glad to see this, since the "architecture of participation" has been the only one of the big Web 2.0 themes that Apple had seemed to be missing. He was slightly dismissive of populist podcasting, describing it as "Wayne's World for radio", and celebrating the arrival of professional radio stations into the market, but nonetheless, he was very high on the podcasting phenomenon, and the excitement that millions of users have displayed about it.

Sixapart.comhttp://www.sixapart.com [Sixapart.com] Six Apart - ProNet - Podcasting in iTunes 4.9: Our co-founder Mena Trott is attending the D: All Things Digital conference, where she just sent word that Steve Jobs did a demo of iTunes 4.9. The big news is, the new version of the popular music management app beloved by iPod owners will feature integrated support for podcasting. Current plans call for podcasts to be free downloads: Users will submit their podcasts and Apple will be hand-picking the content it makes available to iTunes users.

Engadget.com[Engadget.com] iTunes 4.9 adding support for podcasts - Engadget - www.engadget.com: With one click you’ll be able to subscribe to different feeds and have them automatically delivered to your iPod without using a third-party app like iPodder. You’ll be able to search through a directory of available podcasts (producers will be able to register their podcasts with the iTunes Music Store), but users will have the option of adding whatever feeds they want to iTunes. The other big news: Jobs says that he would consider selling podcasts through the iTunes Music Store, something which should have Audible just a little worried.

[Rexblog.com] rexblog.com: Rex Hammock's Weblog: An RSS-enabled financial transaction between you and me and Apple. Now, imagine an RSS feed from the iTunes store that says "Top 10 favorite podcasts on the topic of bird watching" or "Last ten podcasts from your favorite trade association's annual meeting." Imagine that and you can start conceiving the myriad ways having the Apple's iTunes store step into podcasting will change things. Just remember, there were MP3 players before there was the iPod. Just remember, there were ways to purchase and download music files before there was an iTunes store.

News.com.comhttp://news.com.com [News.com.com] Apple | News.blog | CNET News.com: Calling podcasting "the Wayne's World of radio," Apple chief Steve Jobs aims to bring the online audio format into the mainstream. He demoed version 4.9 of iTunes at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif. , on Sunday, and said that iTunes will provide integrated support for podcasting. Podcasters can submit their programs to Apple, which plans to make them available for free downloads; iTunes 4.9 is expected to be released this summer.
