What?

[Archived in Entry]

MaisonBisson.com[MaisonBisson.com] I’m not sure what to think about Steve J’s WWDC announcement (video stream) of Apple’s switch to x86 processors. Coverage at MacNN, Mac Rumors, Ars Technica, etc. I’m not sure, but it would be easier to take if I wasn’t the only one who saw conspiracy in it. Does this relate to Intel’s recent shoehorning of DRM onto the CPU?

Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.

*scottstuff*[*scottstuff*] Apple to Intel, again: Gruber wrote about this a couple weeks ago, when the WSJ printed a rumor that Apple was going to start using Intel’s chips. It’s hard to argue with his basic point: even if Apple wanted to dump PPC chips and switch, it would take at least 18 months to get enough ISV support to allow them to launch products. And, during that 18-month window, no one would buy PPC-based Macs.

Arstechnica.comhttp://arstechnica.com [Arstechnica.com] Apple to Intel announcement at WWDC?: Intel would offer Apple instant brand recognition and credibility, an ample supply of CPUs, and even the option of marketing Mac OS X as an x86 alternative to Windows. While I'm quite fond of my Dual 2.5GHz Power Macintosh G5, the thought of having a pair of Pentium D 840s (or better yet, some dual-core Opterons) in there is intriguing. And don't get me started on a Centrino Aluminum PowerBook.

Arstechnica.comhttp://arstechnica.com [Arstechnica.com] Ars Technica - The PC Enthusiast's Resource: Yesterday, Steve Jobs dropped what is arguably the biggest bombshell in Apple's 29-year history. Ars Apple Technology Specialist John Siracusa reflects on the switch to Intel and what it means for Apple and Mac users.

Theappleblog.comhttp://www.theappleblog.com [Theappleblog.com] The Apple Blog » Apple and Intel: Apple also have much of the other parts of code supported under x86. There was a time when having an Apple application on a Windows platform was a rarity. Now we have iTunes, QuickTime and even smaller apps like the iDisk connector. As Windows focused applications these aren’t bad, and it wouldn’t take as much work as we might thing to migrate the opt layer of OS X - that is, the video components and Window interface that is Quartz and Cocoa in combination with the other tools that make up the layer that sits on top of the Darwin core.
