The sucking sound of DRM - iTunes 4

[Archived in Entry, Mp3 Players Downloads]

The sucking sound of DRM - iTunes 4 mkrus on 2003/04/29:

„mac account for the music shop and started browsing around the music shop... Now maybe I'm not a good sample, but iTunes 4 is to music downloads what iPod was to mp3 players... My little foray into the DRM'ed music space is really an experiment on myself to see if a proprietary system can make the experience compelling enough to make people say, "screw it, I'm going to use DRM." So far, the experience for me is that actually quickly finding clean copies of music I'm looking for and having it seamlessly arrive in my iPod is worth the $.99/song they are charging and the fact that it's protected."“

Does McLuhan explain why some people think Wiki's are beautiful and some people think they're ugly?

„And, gee, it was as if Joi stepped away from the line to see the movie and pulled Mark Federman into the movie from the movie set to raise the level of the discussion. (Nevermind, if you don't understand this referenece, you would have had to have seen the movie.) (And, no, the movie wasn't "A Random Note On A Japanese Holiday" which is a great title for a movie!)“

The useful arts, seattle.: Buymusic.com the sucking begins

„I did read your review, Jake, it was informative, and I absolutley agree with your comments about the DRM, and that this is a preview of what is to come, in a number of forms in the era of electronic content, not just music. But, for one, that does not mean that is has to be painful and treat the consumer as a criminal from the inseption of the standard. As you point out the Kazaa process was much less painful, and I know you are a appreciator of creator rights, which I agree with, but as long as the systems itself cannot create worthwhile option there will always be a black market that is stronger than the above board solution.“

„Interesting bit 'o news: When you go to open a file, Mac OS X 10.3 checks to see if the file is fragmented, and under 20MB. If so, OS X silently defragments the file .“

Chandler Release 0.1 in Python for Mac OS X no less

„Lots of blond and buxom American and Europeans are imported for both hostess bars and strip joints, but only a pure bred Nippon Jin (Japanese) can be a Geisha (do don't believe that Shirley MacClaine movie!)  Japanese actually take pride in their Geisha tradition. I'm not going to take a moral stand here, but will try to point out some interesting facts and thoughts that this quote from Marc Canter highlights.“

Confused

„The thing is, by Mac standards, Chimera is worth using while Opera isn't. While Opera on Windows is pretty nice, and while the Mac version might be quicker at rendering HTML than most other Mac browsers, the UI and the overall un-Maciness of the app make using it an experience very much like swimming in a pool of glue.“

"New iTunes for Old"

„This uses a web interface to manage the plethora of remotes in your living room and tame them, so you end up with one-click macros for'watch a DVD' (ie, turn on your TV, mute the sound, change the video input, turn on the DVD, play the disc, turn on the amplifier, set amp to DVD 6-channel, and, if you have X10 controls, dim your room lights). Cleverly, it then remembers the state of your system, so if you then click the one-click for'play a video', it leaves your TV on, turns off the DVD and turns on the video, and so on. As our current setup is monumentally confusing to both our guests and our children, we're hoping this will improve matters.“

...useless miscellany - Music

„"...I guess I was hoping that there would be so many legal downloads of good music by now that no one would bother trying to point them all out. Oh well. And don’t forget that just because these are legal downloads that you’ve paid good money for, that doesn’t mean you can take them with you on your MP3 player."“

„I'm guessing that whoever set up the site wasn't experienced in dealing with high-traffic websites with large bandwidth downloads. I don't know anything else just now (since their website is unavailable). Are they using mp3s?“
