Product Description:

Get the most from digital music with Sony's DNF610 portable CD player, which includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take advantage of ATRAC3plus, Sony's proprietary music-compression technology when making custom MP3 CDs on a computer. The DNF610 puts the best of the broadcast world at your fingertips, too, with its FM/AM/TV/weather-band digital tuner. Using its 51-station preset memory, favorite stations are never more than a button away. The player also includes Sony's popular Jog Dial control for easy folder navigation, a two-line dot-matrix display, and achieves up to 40 hours of continuous playback on two "AA" type batteries (not included). ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from a PC's hard drive and burns them to a CD using ATRAC3plus compression. Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. Bookmark playback lets you program favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Comment: A reliable cd/mp3 player Rating: Rating: 4
I originally wanted a 20gb ipod but since money was tight I decided to buy this disc player. I was brought in by the Atrac format software that would allow nearly 400 songs to fit on one single disc. Allow me to explain to you the positive and negative things about this product before you consider buying it.

Positive
-It plays MP3 cds
-The Atrac format software allows up to 400 songs to be stored on one disc (depending on the song's bitrate rate)
-Jog Dial allows you to search for particular songs on the disc without having to skip through hundreds of songs
-The song titile display is a nice feature. It shows the song title, artist name, album title, and bitrate rate for each track.
-It's great on battery life. I use to Energizer AA Ni-Ca rechargable batteries and I haven't had to recharge them in a long time.
-G-Protection virtually eliminates all skipping unless your cd has tons of deep scratches all over it. You can shake the unit, turn it upside down and whatever and it still doesn't skip.
-TV/FM/AM/Weather tuner, the TV and FM/AM radio features are a great bonus to this unit. It's fairly easy to get reception. I can't tell you anything about the Weather tuner though since I hardly use it.

Negatives
-I would prefer it that the max volume of the unit were louder. You can hardly hear it in extremely noisy and crowded places.
-I hate the cheap headphones that come with the player. I recommend you get the street style headphones that wrap around your ear
-This last negative is my biggest problem with the unit. It has to do with the Atrac format software. When you have a lot of mp3s stored on your computers (more than 1,000), the software will freeze for about 5 minutes after you start it up in order to load your files. The other problem with the Atrac software is this: I like using it to save several full albums on one disc but sometimes errors come up and some songs are left off the cd. This can be very annoying at times. Other than that the software is ok.

Overall I recommend you purchase this unit if an ipod isn't in your best financial interest at the moment. It's very reliable and will last for a long time. The Pros outweigh the cons as you can see so get it...

Comment: A great CD player Rating: Rating: 4
I think most of the reviews here on this item are right on, so I'll just add a few things I thought.

I find this MP3/CD player convenient enough that I feel hard-disk MP3 players aren't worth the high price. MP3 files don't really sound as good as real CD's. For a while I've been only listening to MP3's, but after switching to CD's again, I don't feel like going back (though they do have their up's too).

This CD player has a very, very long battery life --- I don't have to keep recharging batteries like most other electronic devices these days. It's rather compact and light, and not fragile.

A few negatives: the sounds are not as configurable (no equalizer, its mega bass system isn't as good --- see other reviews); there are only two playing modes --- shuffle and single song modes with no repeat feature, so you cannot let it keep playing; the radio/tv mode often starts even the unit is put on hold (it's so easy to accidentally press the "on" button for radio --- I don't know why hold doesn't work here); the navigator pad is a bit small; and the headphone that comes with the unit totally sucks (with a bit of bass the sounds will be distorted all the time...just buy a better one yourself).

But even with all the cons I'm pretty happy with it. To me the long battery life itself is quite appealing...it doesn't deliver the best sounds (for which you should look elsewhere) but is still a great CD/MP3 walkman.

Comment: great CD PLAYER but.................. Rating: Rating: 4
this cd player i would recomend for someone with a big colection of cds. I dont rely hav alot of cds and i thought this player would easily download stuff. well it doesnt. until i found the connect website store. the software that it comes with is simple and easy and i give it 10 out of 10. the headphones broke after i steped on them lightly and i cant belive that sony would put headfones that mess up your hair with this player. 4 out of 10. the sound quality is outstanding and is the strong point of this but it is hard to hear on a bus so id give it a 9//10. the durability is excellent and iv droped it on concrete a couple of times and it still works perfectly fine and it has withstood back pack life.
the radio is hard to hear and the reception is poor if your not standing still and the headphone wires arnt straight. it is sooooooo frustrating to program your radio stations cause it never seems to program it rite unless you hold and press, hold and press, and finaly hold and press the radio buton until it finaly works [7/10]the jog dial is great cuase it is simple and easy to navigate through your files [9/10] baterey life is also outstanding [10/10]. the atrac is incerdible. you can fit 350 songs on a cd!![10/10].

botom line
this is an awesome player if you want to take your entire cd colection werever u go and hav some extra stuf [radio etc.] if u want to download onto a tiny player get a dell dj or ipod.
