Slate column on why streaming rocks]]>

Clive Thompson on 2004/04/24:
„Most legal downloads will work only on approved devices. A song bought at iTunes in "AAC," or Advanced Audio Coding, format won't work on anything but an iPod, while songs bought at MusicMatch or Napster in Microsoft's "WMA," Windows Media Audio, format won't work on iPods or many older MP3 players. And what if you get bored of that Strokes album you downloaded? Too bad: You can't sell it to anyone.“

„"Last week Slate published my latest column -- which is an ode to streaming, that mostly-neglected way of getting digital music. I tried out the streaming service Rhapsody, and discovered that quite to my surprise, it rocked madly. With 500,000 songs instantly at my beck and call, for $10 a month, it suddenly became really easy to explore new artists -- something that is incredibly expensive if you do it by buying CDs, and incredibly slow if you do it by using Kazaa.“http://www.stargeek.com/item/107880.html - Cached

„I'm not a particularly anally-retentive clean person (I'm sure Spratt, my college roommate, would go as far as to say that I'm a bit of a slob), but I find myself cleaning the metallic surface on the back on a daily basis (oh no, a fingerprint!)I want to show it off to everyone. I want to tell anyone who cares about music that their life is incomplete with those other, inferior MP3 players, that living without an iPod makes you an old and boring person.“http://www.sinosplice.com/~abtom/archives/ cat_tech.html#001042 - Cached

„One of the criticisms of the iPod is that it ignores file and directory names and relies entirely on ID3 tags to organize files. Hence, even if you spent hours getting your file names all nice and organized but didn't fix up your ID3 tags (which are especially likely if you got all of your MP3s off KaZaA), or if you have your music organized into subdirectories (like: C:\MP3\shitty music\Andrew WK), it'll ignore all that. At first, I was annoyed by this, but I've found that it's much easier to navigate through my songs when you can sort them by artist name, album name, and genre.“http://www.sinosplice.com/~abtom/archives/ 2003_11.html - Cached
