Programmers crack Apples iTunes again
[Apple Log: News, Links, Podcasting] News of the modified PyMusique comes days after Apple announced it had changed its downloading systems to block the use of PyMusique to download music free of anti-piracy controls.
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[Erdei mac geekery :: Main Page] Hackers re-enable PyMusique access to iTMS: The trio of developers who created PyMusique have found yet another way for their software application to purchase copy-protection free songs from the iTunes Music Store (iTMS), following Apple recent security fix counter that prevented access by third-party applications. The PyMusique application allows LInux/Windows users to register for, browse, and purchase iTunes music--much like the iTunes application; however, the songs are free from any anti-piracy protections. Apple's iTunes encodes these songs using its FairPlay DRM to prevent users from playing the songs on more than five authorized computers.
[Dynatech] 3/26/05 SUPERCHARGED: "The Local reports that a 27-year old man who allowed people to download a film from his PC has become the first Swede to be charged with illegal file sharing, after a tip-off from the country's notorious Anti-Piracy Bureau. It's a critical test case, as prosecutors say that anything less than a prison sentence would make future prosecutions unlikely." From the article: "The case was brought after a tip off from Antipiratbyrån (APB), a lobby organization set up by the media industry to combat illegal downloading in Sweden. Since the man was reported APB has found itself in hot water, with an Internet company accusing the organization itself of illegally downloading films and games.
[Cynthia L. Webb] Getting To Apple's Core: Apple said the North Carolina State University computer engineering graduate released a copy of 'Mac OS X Tiger on a file-swapping Web site, where people downloaded thousands of unauthorized copies." More from the article: "Neither Cupertino-based Apple nor Steigerwald would discuss terms of the settlement. But Raleigh, N.C.-based attorney Joe Cheshire, who represents Steigerwald, said his client would pay monetary damages to Apple. As part of the settlement, Steigerwald also had to sign and distribute a repentant statement. 'Although I did not mean to do any harm, I realize now that my actions were wrong and that what I did caused substantial harm to Apple, and for that I am truly sorry.'" No word yet if Steigerwald has to do any other self-flogging, though he might still face criminal prosecution.

[Filesharingplace.com] FSP Forums > iTunes store 'hole' open again: A new version of PyMusique, 0.3, was released today which circumvented the block that Apple put in place on Monday. PyMusique simply allows users to become iTunes music customers without needing Apple's Mac and Windows-only iTunes client software, expanding Apple's customer base. So a PyMusique user can setup an account and pay for music - but not 'steal' songs for free. Because Apple only applies DRM at the client, it has the happy bonus that music won't be encumbered by DRM and the ever-decreasing freedom that Apple permits.
[Subterrain.net] Apple attempts to block iTunes DRM hack, PyMusique | SUBTERRAIN.NET: PyMusique emerged online last week as a copy protection-free interface into the popular iTunes store. One of the creators is Jon Johansen, the notorious Norwegian programmer responsible for releasing DVD-copying software in 1999. Apple released a statement Monday saying the problem had been fixed (sic), and that some iTunes customers would need to upgrade their software. "The security hole in the iTunes Music Store which was recently exploited has been closed, and as a consequence the iTunes Music Store will now sell music only to customers using iTunes version 4.7," the company said in a statement.

[Indicare.org] INDICARE : INDICARE Blog: Thomson has acquired MediaSec? Technologies, "a pioneer in digital watermarking and copy detection technologies", according to this press release. Thomson is a third of the trinity that bought ContentGuard?, the patent holder of important DRM technologies. The deal was approved by the EU Commission this month, Microsoft and Time Warner being the other two (initially) taking an interest in ContentGuard?. With the latest acquisition Thomson expands its portfolio, while the control over (the development of) DRM technologies shrinks further.
