[Songsillinoismp3.blogspot.com] songs:illinois: "Nice Day" in particular tells the tale of a 43 year old guy's dreams and fears. It seems his fears usually overshadow any of his dreams except on this one day when him and his boy get to go swimming at a friend's pool.
[Fluxblog.org] FLUXBLOG: Cleanest In The Region!: Whereas the indie rock of my teenage years was arty, cosmopolitan, colorful, and often self-consciously political, Modest Mouse were unapologetically blue collar and semi-rural, with a body of work that focused on the vast wasteland of depressed middle-of-nowhere towns that make up the bulk of modern America. I don't directly relate to the places or characters in most Modest Mouse songs, and I don't find much to romanticize in them either, and so their music has always been slightly uncomfortable for me, though not necessarily in a bad way.
[Wfmu.org] WFMU's On The Download: William Howard Arpaia's motivational rant is not technically a song-poem, since writer and performer in this case are the same person. But Arpaia was forever blurring the boundaries between vanity and song-poem anyway, and this one is just too strong to contain any longer.
