I, iTunes

[Archived in Entry, Mp3 Players Best Price]

I, iTunes KirkSamuels on 2004/02/16:

„I don’t own one and can really see the benefit one would have in my life but at $300 for the cheapest one I am stopped from rushing out to buy one. There are other mp3 players out there but for only slightly less money and when price isn’t much difference why not go with best? I’ll start saving up. Maybe in a few months I’ll be plugged in.“

snowdeal.org > ex machina

„"iCommune is a plug-in which extends Apple's iTunes software to share music over the network. Your friends' music libraries appear in the iTunes source list. You can browse their collections, and choose to download or stream their music.“

Linkstew :: The Ideal Downloadable Music Service.

„The first thing a downloadable music service needs is music to let people download, and while emusic obviously had some music, in the end their song selection was just not enough. Sure, there was still a lot of music there, and I downloaded a lot from them while I had my subscription, but even more of what I wanted was not there, and that's why I ultimately cancelled my subscription. This issue will be addressed immediately by Apple's service, because the rumor claims that they've gotten all five major record labels to agree to make their music available through the service.“

Restrictions and Price Remain iTunes Turnoffs (washingtonpost.com)

„"With over 25 million songs purchased and downloaded to date, the iTunes Music Store is hands-down the most successful online music store," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Music fans are buying and downloading almost 1.5 million songs per week from the iTunes Music Store, which is a rate of 75 million songs per year."“

The Price of Silence

„Apple iTunes 4.5 was released yesterday, bringing with it several nice new features, such as a live-updating "Party Shuffle" playlist — as well as not-so-nice features like attaching Music Store links to every artist and album in your library (I turned this off immediately). As for the iTunes Music Store itself, Apple has integrated its QuickTime features of music videos and movie trailers (this is related to music how?), shopper-created "iMixes" and for this month, a new "Free Track of the Day," a questionable asset being that today's artist is Avril Lavigne .“

iTunes for Windows

„Well, as the words on Apple's main website indicated, Apple has departed from their traditional modus operandi and released a Windows version of the popular iTunes software. This release gives Windows users a native way to sync their iPod portable music players and access the iTunes music store , which allows downloads of a large variety of songs for $0.99 each.“

iTMS = IotY

„But for finally finding a middle ground between the foot-dragging record labels and the free-for-all digital pirates and for creating a bandwagon onto which its competitors immediately jumped, Apple's iTunes Music Store is Time's Coolest Invention of 2003. “

Blogzine.net: Napster vs. iTunes: We have a winner.

„I started out my adventure with Napster by searching for the Don McLean ode to Rock n' Roll, American Pie. It quickly appeared in the list, and in 30 seconds I was listening to its goodness. This brings us to our first benefit Napster has over iTunes.“

Buying Music Online

„I've been fiddling around with iTunes for Windows for the last couple of days, and not entirely surprisingly, I like it quite a bit; it's well-designed both functionally and esthetically, downloading's a snap (I downloaded a Sarah McLachlan EP and the Jeff Beck-Rod Stewart version of "People Get Ready"), and as a player it handles most of the music I own just fine; it doesn't seem to want to play nice with the few .wma files I have, but this is not exactly surprising. I would prefer to download mp3s over the aac format, but I can live with the need for digital rights management, and as nearly all my music listening these days is done from my computers anyway, this is not an onerous thing.“

That big 11 cents

„Which is how, as Krugman sees it, the Bush administration managed to sell tax cuts as a benefit to the poor when the result will really be to benefit the rich, and why they managed to rally support for war in Iraq with arguments for which they didn't have the evidence. Journalists "find it very hard to deal with blatantly false arguments," he argues. "By inclination and training, they always try to see two sides to an issue, and find it hard even to conceive that a major political figure is simply lying."“

NY Times looks at future of downloadable music

„To nobody's surprise, Fortune has named the iTunes Music Store the Product of the Year. Because Steve Jobs was able to convince the major music labels to allow Apple to sell music online for 99 cents per song, consumers have "enefited ethically, by having a viable alternative to stealing music; and aesthetically, by being able to search for, preview, and download music with unprecedented ease." The iTunes Music Store gave music labels a viable business model for Internet sales,...“

How to circumvent DRM on iTunes Music Store downloads

„Well, to skip over some parts of your argument (neither Apple nor I care that you want to use iTunes without an iPod: they go together like cars and gas, but I digress), what’s *always* missing in these arguments is the artists’ viewpoint. I don’t see a lot of commentary from artists on what they think of mp3s or DRM or any of this. Consider that Edgar Meyer might be thrilled to have his old material available in digital format: the costs of making those records have been recouped some times over, I’m sure, and most people who are fans wouldn’t begrudge buying $.99 tracks from an artist they admire.“ posted on 2004/07/27

iPod fodder

„But the Apple iTunes store is not available in Europe until at least the summer, and the other music download services seem to be entirely devoted to the DRM-encrusted WMA encoding format, which can’t be played on an iPod. The European services are also a complete rip-off - charging 99 pence a track (a whopping 75% mark-up on US prices), and then not even allowing us to choose what quality of encoding we want.“

Digital Music sales

„Andrew Orlowski over at the Register spoke with former MP3.com CEO Michael Robertson to get his two cents on Apple's iTunes service and the rush of other companies to repeat Apple's success in the Windows market before Apple dominates it. Robertson, who failed to get the record industry to let him sell their tunes in digital format way back in pre-Napster 1998, shared with Orlowski a very knowing and blunt opinion. He sees failure.“

Linkmeister: Music pages

„I should say that that list was actually created by iTunes and a neat little applescript, which just exported the contents of my mp3 collection as an html table (I also made a database). I think I'm missing about 20-30 CDs in there, somewhere, but I just don't have the time to hunt them down and rip them.“

Breaking Windows with Apples

„Windows users — I know you’re out there — you can now get iTunes for Windows . I’ve seen Windows Media Player, and I’ve used Windows Media Player, and man, you Windows people don’t know what you’ve been missing. iTunes is like your very own personal music geek servant, organizing and promoting your music.“
