Handheld predictions
[Archived in Entry, Video Mp3 Player]
Scott on 2003/10/29:
„If these 1.5-4GB models sell well, then expect 1.8" (iPod) models in early or mid 2005, with up to 80GB of disk space. At that point, it's unclear exactly which market niche they're going for--that's more then enough disk space to be a high-end MP3 player, hold thousands of digital still pictures, and a few hours of digital video. It makes for a seriously bulky handheld, although probably not any worse then Sony's NX/NZ series.“

Some slightly related:
„The ad featured a 10-year-old singing along to "Lose Yourself" playing on an iPod and aired mid-year in 2003. The lawsuit states, "Eminem has never nationally endorsed any commercial products and .even if he were interested in endorsing a product, any endorsement deal would require a significant amount of money, possibly in excess of $10 million."“http://fox.is-a-geek.net/archives/ 2004_02.html#000748 - Cached

„Britannica, for example, had a 50,000-article, 44 million-word database (an IBM system originally designed for the Mormons, who are a formidable publishing enterprise) from which they printed those instantly-recognizable 32 volumes. Making that database readable online was a formidable undertaking, but since the content was already in SGML, it was reasonable to imagine pouring it onto the Web. We've already got lots of interesting map systems online; GIS data is very highly structured, and designed to be machine-readable; so the challenge isn't one of creating lots of new content.“http://Blogger.iftf.org/Future/ 2003_10.html#000209 - Cached

„"So far, handhelds with chips to help users connect wirelessly to the Internet or to their other gadgets are in the minority of handhelds sold. This year, only about 15% of PDAs sold include wireless capabilities; Todd Kort, an analyst at research firm Gartner, predicts that the number will double next year because of the cheaper, more battery-efficient wireless chips on the horizon. Kort predicts that corporate customers wanting to keep their workers wirelessly plugged into the office will help prop up handheld sales for the foreseeable future, though he still doesn't forecast growth for handhelds as a market in general."“http://www.gearbits.com/archives/ 2003_12.html#000452 - Cached

„It's really nice when you're trying to rout something at an angle and it slips in the middle of the cut and jerks the workpiece right out of your hands and flings it across the room. Or the super anti-precision fence that's almost impossible to adjust and keep in place. Or the slippery painted surface that wears off, exposing the rough surface that mars the workpiece as you slide it over.“http://www.gearbits.com/archives/ cat_other.html#000463 - Cached

„Wireless operators obviously prefer solutions that uses their own wireless network, but the cost is too expensive at this point, especially considering mega-pixel cameras. Cable-based transmission has many issues, and local wireless connection such as Bluetooth, Wifi and IR are obviously much more suitable.“http://blog.neoteny.com/nakajima/archives/ 2003_06.html#005666 - Cached
