Gravatar - Globally Recognized Avatar » Oh Crap: Everyone else gets to choose from a selection of, say, 100 pictures. It’s kinda defeatist to the whole concept, but I have been surprised to see how many people have chosen non-representative gravatars (something like the ubiquitious Windows XP frog), so you would only limit their choice of gravatar, not actually the use they get out of it (since they wouldn’t want a picture of themselves anyway). At first glance this would only cut down processing required, not bandwidth, but if there’s 100 gravatars that people see everywhere, their browser cache would prevent a lot of requests to your server.

Accessible contents menu? | clagnut/blog: If a browser renders the style sheets and also has DOM-capable JavaScript, I use JavaScript to import nav.css. This hides the list, requiring a ‘click’ on the Site contents button required to show it. Even though I’ve only used an onclick event handler (implying a pointing device) to operate the drop down, the mechanism also works with a keyboard on the browsers I’ve tested (IE6, Opera 7, Mozilla, Safari). Try it yourself by using a keyboard to navigate to the About page: load the page, press tab a few times (depending on your browser) to move the focus to the Site contents link and press return to display the drop down.
Silent Corner: But first, for the obligatory gaming commentary, I’m still playing Joint Operations on occasion and World of Warcraft although my interest is waning in the latter. There just seems to be a lack of good people playing on there at least at the lower levels (I switched servers so I had to start all over leveling my chars). Brothers in Arms was just released, though, and I will definitely be picking that up probably after my vacation in a week. That game is looking pretty sharp.
