[Fallingsky.blogs.com] Falling Sky: MP3 of the Week: Back when I was a wee slip of a schoolboy, I played the violin. I did. Took it up to grade 3 (or was it 5? The numbers look so similar...) before I gave up, partly because it felt like I had enough on my plate - oh, those heady GCSE days - but also because, really, where was the fun? How could it possibly relate to the music I loved, full of adolescent angst, anger and energy? It was only years later that I heard - and subsequently saw - Warren Ellis of the Bad Seeds and Dirty Three making the most astonishing, powerful, heart-breaking sounds out of a violin when, up until then, the only rocking use of the instrument had been Come On Eileen. Then came Godspeed You Black Emperor and A Silver Mt Zion, classical strings beautifully wrapped around howling guitars and chest-thumping percussion, and I asked myself: why didn't anyone tell me it could be like this back when I was playing? Even now, it's still refreshing and exciting to see classical instruments used in modern music as more than a gimmick, and if such possibilities were made clear to kids back in those school days... I dunno, maybe there wouldn't be quite so many instrument cases gathering dust in parental lofts.
[Umlauts] Cross Europe Chart Challenge... of Death!... : AA: If sexual assault were a sound, it wouldnt sound all that different to this number. A guy who sounds like the distant cousin of DJ Bobo, and a girl who is probably one of Marianne Faithfulls bastard heroin-using-born children, if their voices dont push you into slitting your wrists, the horrible “melody” will.
