Cellphone viruses
[Archived in Entry, Mp3 Players Linux]
Narasimha Chari on 2003/11/29:
„(He's actually quoted as saying something a little different, but I imagine this is what he meant.) Since the OS in an embedded device is essentially invisible to the end-user, he's going to hold his carrier or the handset vendor responsible for fixing any virus problems. As more and more classes of CE devices (a) become network-enabled (DVRs, MP3 players, TVs, phones, cameras, fridges), (b) get equipped with standard OS'es (Windows NT, embedded Linux), expect to see viruses begin to spread to these platforms. This trend probably represents a significant extension to the business of antivirus software vendors (e.g., Network Associates which sells McAfee)....“

Some slightly related:
„One neat little thing I found for iChat is iChat Streaming Icon, which is a little utility that takes a picture from your webcam and makes a small icon for ichat that others see. At first, I thought it was just a gimmick, but I found that it was actually pretty useful. The icon is tiny, only about 30 pixels on a side and the quality at that resolution is bad enough that I don't worry about it being an invasion of my privacy, since the people who can see it already have access to my online status.“http://www.wirefarm.com/archives/ cat_technology.html#003645 - Cached

„The film was beautifully shot, with several action sequences which worked every bit as well on film as I'd imagine they would have in the original comic format. Snipes can certainly handle both the martial arts duties and the laconic one-liners convincingly. It's just that it would be nice to see the writers deploy the characters in the service of a really good storyline next time round.“http://soreeyes.org/archives/ 2002_11.html#000051 - Cached

„As of now, there are more than 20 million Internet connected cell phones in Japan. Web enabled cell phone will become common eventually all over the world, I suppose. Then the scheme explained here might be used widely.“http://www.imc.org/ietf-openproxy/mail-archive/ msg00127.html - Cached
„The key would be to have the highest resolution for the most accuracy - that is lots of GPS "pixels" on the road map constantly moving and being tracked to calculate average speed most accurately. In the U.S., since there are thousands of FEDEX and UPS trucks that already have vehicle tracking installed, they certainly increase the "resolution" of traffic information across the entire USA. FEDEX and UPS could probably make a KILLING selling this information to a traffic monitoring company that provides integrated real-time traffic data to a GPS navigation device installed in a vehicle.“http://voip-blog.tmcnet.com/blog/tom-keating/archives/ 2004_04.html#000014 - Cached

„As suggested, the challenge is to enjoy the benefits of massive data conglomeration without losing the benefit of privacy and freedom. It'll be tough - the technological solutions to identity frauds at all levels from financial cryptographers have not succeeded in gaining traction, probably because they are so asymmetric, and deployment is so complicated as to rule out easy wins. Even the fairly mild SSL systems the net community put in place in the'90s have been rampantly bypassed by phishing-based identity attacks, not leaving us with much hope that financial cryptographers will ever succeed in privacy protection [4].“http://www.financialcryptography.com/mt/archives/ cat_security.html#000146 - Cached

„The program can sum up the main points and present them in grammatically correct sentences -- and in just a few pages."Perhaps the scariest one is the use of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to sense when you arrive in your office, thus alerting your computer (and your boss?), which boot ups and opens to the page you last looked at the night before. Just a couple of problems with this one: First, I'm not a fan of having any RFID devices on me at any time. If it's not embedded in my clothing, then it could be something I might lose, which gives rise to all kinds of nasty security and privacy issues unless there's some additional authentication required.“http://www.lawtechguru.com/archives/ mobile_tech_gadgets.html#000155 - Cached

„Today’s computer users are mainly comprised of: almost all individuals, large companies and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in the developed markets, along with a small fraction of the same in the world’s emerging markets (think Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa). The bulk of the individuals and employees in the emerging markets are without computers at this point of time. These are the next market.“http://www.emergic.org/collections/ tech_talk_the_next_billion.html - Cached
