Free speech(es)

„But an equally big deal ('till v2) is that we managed to push through offering this year's BBC Reith Lectures as DRM-free, mp3 downloads. They'll be added to the site after each lecture (looks like first one will go up Thursday morning). This may not sound like a big deal to folks, but this 'trial' is something we haven't managed to do before - so we're hoping there's a good reaction from punters.“

Sketches of Gehry's Guggenheim

„I wasn't aware of this when I did these drawings, but inspired by Rodcorp's recent experiments in 'How simply and recognisably can we draw buildings?', in turn inspired by Things Magazine's post on buildings as logos (including'building logotype tennis' by Jonathan Bell and I in the comments there), I'm posting these sketches here anyway. The only way I could think of representing the sinuous form of Gehry's Guggenheim was let the pen go (again, these are details - click for the larger image).“

A new front for the MP3 War

„AK-MP3 player built into the body of the ammunition magazine of Kalashnikov automatic rifle. Player could be used on its own or it could be attached to the Kalashnikov machinegun instead of the ordinary magazine. Stainless steel body makes this new player uniquely suitable for outdoors.“

Why Apple is smarter than business analysts think

„Last I checked, the iPod was one of the best-selling MP3 players out there, despite its premium pricing. Just in the last quarter alone, Apple has sold 336,000 of them. And since a Windows version of the iPod has been on the market for months now, there are plenty of users them who aren't "Mac People".“

The Power Law, iCan and Weblogs...

„So the BBC has launched a public pre-beta version of iCan - their attempt to help people re-engage with and self-organise around politics at an local/national/international level. The early stage makes it almost inevitable that there are going to be bugs - and bugs there are - but the idea seems sound and there's considerable scope for iteration toward something profoundly useful and important. The non-beta version is a way off yet, but I can recommend that anyone who's interested in starting a campaign or getting engaged around an issue try the site out and feedback into the development cycle.“

Music category archive - Amidst a tangled web

„His fourth album will be forthcoming, but in a forward-thinking move he and his management have shown who matters to them. They have given an MP3 to his fan web site (he doesn't have an official one that I know of) to be made freely available for download for one month. The song is One Safe Place , and the lyrics are there too.“

BBC Reith Lectures

„Transcripts, real audio streaming and MP3 downloads are available. Good on the BBC! The MP3 downloads are new and are DRM-free.“

Good news for BBC radio Internet listeners

„2) Someone at the BBC has decided to allow the Reith lectures to go out as MP3s as well as streamed audio, just as one of the first and most popular campaigns on their iCan campaign site requested. It’s a pity they decided to record voice at 64Kbps only (so the file size is large). Even if you don’t want to listen to the Reith lectures visit the page where there is a form and register your support for MP3s!“
